My Mummy's beef stroganoff

For 4 portions
- 1lb rump steak
- 1 level teaspoon salt
- Half teaspoon black pepper
- 2 small onions
- 4oz mushrooms
- 2oz butter
- 1 rounded teaspoon plain flour
- 1 rounded teaspoon tomato puree
- 5fl oz strong stock (quarter pint)
Irish stew

Heat oven to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3
- 1 tbsp sunflower oil
- 200g smoked streaky bacon, preferably in one piece, skinned and cut into chunks
- 900g stewing lamb, cut into large chunks
- 5 medium onions, sliced
- 5 carrots, sliced into chunks
- 3 bay leaves
- small bunch thyme
- 100g pearl barley
- 850ml lamb stock
- 6 medium potatoes, cut into chunks
- small knob of butter

- 1 jar Balti based cooking sauce
- 1 tin chopped tomatoes
- 1 punnet cherry tomatoes
