Beef and Guinness pie

Ingredients

  • 1oz plain flour
  • 1 lb chuck steak cut into cubes
  • 20g butter
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp tomato puree
  • 500ml Guinness
  • 300ml hot beef stock
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • seasoning
  • Packet of just roll puff pastry

Preparation

Step 1

Place the flour into a large bowl, season and add the steak, coating evenly
Heat the butter and oil in a large pan
Add the meat and brown quickly all over, then remove with a slotted spoon and set aside
Add the onions and carrots to the pan and fry gently for about two mins
Return the meat to the pan and add the Worcestershire sauce, tomato puree, Guinness, stock and sugar, season and bring to the boil
Cover, reduce the heat and simmer for about an hour
Transfer to a casserole dish and cover with a layer of puff pastry, make a little slit in the middle for the air to escape
Put into a preheated oven 200c for about 30 mins or until the pastry is golden
